How high risk activities affect life insurance
When applying for life insurance, providers will examine every aspect of your lifestyle. This includes your general health, your smoking and drinking habits, your family medical history but also involves looking at your occupation and hobbies.

This is because even if you are an exceptionally healthy teetotal non-smoker you may still be classed as ‘high risk’ if you have an occupation that is considered hazardous or pursue sports or hobbies that are classed as being dangerous. This often results in increased premiums.

People who have occupations that are classed as being high risk include fishermen, pilots, offshore oil and gas refinery workers and members of the armed forces. The environment in which you work is also considered so whilst a photographer or journalist would not normally be classed as high risk, one working in a war zone would be. Similarly, if you regularly have interaction with people suffering from major ailments, you are considered a much greater risk. Essentially, a hazardous occupation is one that has a higher chance of exposing you to early death, critical illness or injury.

When it comes to dangerous sports or hobbies, every provider has their own criteria with regards to what they consider risky and in a bid to remain competitive they will alter this from one year to the next. Generally speaking activities such as parachuting, climbing, mountaineering, caving, potholing and motor sports amongst many, many others are classed as being dangerous.

So long as you are willing to pay a higher premium, high risk applicants should still be able to purchase life cover. Even if you struggle to find life insurance protection through mainstream providers, the good news is there are specialist companies out there that deal exclusively with high risk clients.
