Melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer, has risen by more than 40 per cent in that time, making it the fastest rising cancer in Britain. According to the British Association of Dermatologists, southwest England alone has experienced an 18 per cent rise in cases of melanoma in the past two years.
Similarly, the incidences of mouth, womb, and kidney cancer in the UK have also grown rapidly.
One in four of all deaths in Britain are now caused by cancer yet in many cases simple lifestyle changes could significantly reduce the chance of developing the disease. If people were to avoid excessive sun exposure, stop smoking, followed a healthier diet and limited their alcohol intake, then it is likely cancer rates would slow down considerably.
One thing which has been significantly affected by our worsening lifestyles and health is the premiums we can expect to pay for our life and critical illness cover. Whilst life and critical illness insurance is cheaper than ever, the increased health problems associated with poor lifestyles have meant that in many cases, people now have to pay more since they represent an increased risk to the provider.
This may discourage many people from applying for cover in the first place yet with improved diagnosis and treatments of life threatening illness now available, survival rates are also improving. This makes protection such as critical illness cover absolutely vital since it provides invaluable financial support during times of recovery.
If UK lifestyles continue in their current manner and cancer rates keep increasing, it seems financial protection – however expensive it may seem – will become more and more of a necessity to us all.
