Michael Hollins, was facing financial ruin following a string of ill-advised business ventures and hoped to collect a £500,000 life insurance payout by running over his wife and mother of his children, Chloe.
The attempt occurred on July 19th 2008. Chloe Hollins was walking down a country lane when she was struck by the speeding Land Rover Discovery driven by her husband. She survived the attempted murder but spent a month in hospital recovering from a fractured pelvis and a broken leg.
When quizzed by police, Hollins initially denied all knowledge of the incident and claimed he was at the couple’s home in Herford at the time. Police later found the blood-soaked vehicle abandoned five miles away and were able to trace its ownership back to Hollins. A subsequent investigation of his laptop also revealed he had gone onto online chat rooms to discuss murder methods.
Hollins personal relationships were also a motivating factor in the murder attempt on his wife as he was revealed to be a serial womaniser who had fathered a secret family in Scotland. Hollins met Franca Bianchet in Scotland in 1999 and they had a son and daughter together having told her he was separated from his wife.
A string of other mistresses with whom he had affairs have also come to light. In addition to the financial gain he would receive from his wife’s life insurance policy, it is believed Hollins wished to be free of his wife so he could continue such affairs without restraint.
